What is a Montessori Method?
The
Montessori method is an approach to education, which emphasizes
the potential of the young child, and which attempts to develop
this potential by means of a prepared environment, utilizing
specially trained teachers and special teaching materials.
The
founder of the Montessori method of education was Maria
Montessori. In 1896 she qualified as Italy's first woman doctor.
As a result of her pioneering work in the slums of San Lorenzo,
she subsequently directed her energies towards education and
opened her first school there in 1906. Her educational
philosophy quickly became internationally acclaimed and is now
known worldwide.
How does Montessori Method differ from Traditional methods?
The
focus of this system is the development of materials,
educational techniques and observation, which support the
natural development of children. The teacher in a Montessori
classroom serves less as an instructor and more as a guide and
facilitator. Because the method is based upon the
developmentally appropriate activities, the child of ten, for
example, learns through the process of 'education by doing'.
Other teaching methods may instruct the child how to learn.
What does Montessori mean for Children?
Montessori education has an international reputation and
influence. It is a holistic approach: it develops and educates
the child physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally.
It is child centered: each child progresses at their own pace,
not pressured to achieve and encouraged to follow their own path
of development. It offers a unique combination of a highly
structured curriculum, even at pre-school level, and the freedom
for the child to choose their own activities. Because they have
this freedom of choice Montessori children become enthusiastic
learners.
What does Montessori mean for Parents?
•
REASSURANCE that the basics are being taught in a concrete,
fun way, at the age when the child is most receptive to learning
various concepts. The unique learning materials designed by
Maria Montessori ensure this.
•
KNOWLEDGE that your child is respected and being treated as
a valued individual, trained by Montessori teachers, receptive
to his/her individual needs.
•
RELIEF that priority is given to developing social skills in
children, to training them to be thoughtful and courteous, and
to making them knowledgeable and appreciative of the richness of
cultural diversity that characterizes our multi-ethnic society.
How does a Montessori classroom work?
A
child starting a Montessori class is slowly and methodically
introduced to Montessori learning materials. The learning
environment ensures that a child learns in a logical and planned
way. A child in a Montessori class learns through playing with a
wide variety of educational materials.
On a
first visit to a Montessori school parents usually recognize
some well-known pieces of equipment like the Pink Tower but what
they are really looking for is more elusive: the essence of
Montessori lies in children's freedom to learn and develop.
In a
true Montessori classroom the child's freedom, dignity and
independence are of paramount importance; in many ways what the
staff of a school should not be doing is almost as important as
what they should.
