How does Montessori Method differ from Traditional methods?

The Montessori method is an approach to education, which emphasizes the potential of the young child which attempts to develop this potential by means of a prepared environment, utilizing specially trained teachers and special teaching materials.

The founder of the Montessori method of education was Maria Montessori. In 1896 she qualified as Italy's first woman doctor. As a result of her pioneering work in the slums of San Lorenzo, she subsequently directed her energies towards education and opened her first school there in 1906. Her educational philosophy quickly became internationally acclaimed and is now known worldwide.

The focus of this system is the development of materials, educational techniques and observation, which support the natural development of children. The teacher in a Montessori classroom serves less as an instructor and more as a guide and facilitator. Because the method is based upon the developmentally appropriate activities, the child of ten, for example, learns through the process of 'education by doing'. Other teaching methods may instruct the child how to learn.
